Thanksgiving - What Were The Pilgrims Grateful For?
In my childhood, I had the pleasure of using my imagination to imagine how pilgrims set foot on Old Plymouth Rock. It began to take on a mystical and heroic aura to me, but I was not the first person to be involved in these feelings. As early as 1835, Mr. Alexis De Tocqueville spoke of the ethereal qualities of rocks much more eloquently than I did. “This rock has become an object of veneration in the United States. I have seen fragments of it carefully preserved in various cities of the Union. Does this sufficiently show that all human power and greatness are in the soul of man? Here is a stone that the feet of a few outcasts have pressed for a moment; and the stone becomes famous; it is appreciated by a great nation; his own dust is shared like a relic. "
As an adult, I was more likely to use my curiosity to find out why pilgrims came to disembark on this rock in the first place. The answer would lead me to discover a people guided, not only towards a new land but towards a land free from all the tyranny and oppression they had known in their European countries. The Rock became less mystical to me as an adult, while the purpose of pilgrims became a more venerable subject in my thinking. It is impossible to reflect on those brave pilgrims, our ancestors, who risked their lives and limbs and endured the dangers of the sea, the unknown, hunger, and deprivation of all kinds without asking the very powerful reasons why they were so willing. address these dangers and difficulties. . Uncovering their reasons also provided answers on how the first Thanksgiving came about. The Pilgrims were grateful that they saw the promise of their search close at hand, and somehow, by the time of harvest that first year, it seemed their dream had been set in motion.
No one knows the exact words that were said in that sentence just before the first Thanksgiving meal was eaten. But if the collective thinking of everyone who sat down for that meal could be known, we can be sure that they were referring to more important things than personal or family gains and security to which many prayers are reduced today. Their appreciation was for the possibilities of religious freedom, tax with representation, fair hearings before magistrates when accused of crimes, relief from oppressive monarchs, and freedom to express their views without fear of retaliation. Many of the things that are taken for granted and rarely mentioned in thanksgiving prayers today are what they were grateful for.
It is said that about ninety Indians were present at the party, which lasted about three days. The very sight of these natives with completely unfamiliar and diverse clothing and culture eating with our ragged but dignified ancestors in harmony and full acceptance is an image of America's original dream, the dream of a place where everyone is welcome. and they can work together in a common company. I'm sure they were grateful for that little microcosmic example of the big dream they all shared for the country's future. The pilgrims enjoyed the beginning of their dream. We should be grateful for the fullness of that dream. The pilgrims were people who knew very well that nobility was not inherent in those born in palaces, but it was a state of mind and dignity of purpose that was found in people of high thought. They were grateful in that first thanks for the visible result of that higher thought. Happy Thanksgiving America.
