5 Ways To Prevent Your Kids From Getting Sick

According to a recent survey of teachers, teachers are finding it harder than ever to keep their classrooms healthy and clean for students.
The survey found that 90% of teachers think it is "common for students to come to school sick". Only about 30% said that their school's custodians regularly disinfect classrooms.
"Germs are often spread through superficial contact, but many teachers don't have the time or tools to fight these germs," ​​said Dr. Paul S. Horowitz, medical director of Legacy Emanuel's Teen and Pediatric Clinics. Portland, Oregon. "This discrepancy can directly affect the health and well-being of students and teachers."
Over 70% of teachers said they missed school due to an illness they believe they got from one of their students. The survey was conducted by Scholastic Children's Publishing and published at a press conference by the American Medical Association and the National PTA on children's health.
Encouraging children to lead a healthy lifestyle outside the classroom is important for disease prevention, said Janis Hootman, a registered nurse and immediate past president of the National Association of School Nurses.
"Children's health habits outside of school have a direct impact on what happens to them and their classmates during school," Hootman said.
Doctors offer the following tips for parents:

1. Make sure your kids wash their hands. This is the most effective method of disease prevention. Hands should be washed for 10-15 seconds.
2, Do not allow your children to share utensils. While learning to share is important, this shouldn't apply to cups, glasses, or cutlery.
3. Make sure your kids get enough sleep. Sleep deprivation stresses the immune system. Most babies need at least eight hours of sleep a night.
4. Allow a full recovery. Don't send your kids to school when they're sick.
5. Keep your children up to date on vaccinations. The new vaccines protect against a variety of dangerous diseases, including meningitis. "We have come a long way in protecting public health with widespread vaccinations," said Dr. Walter A. Orenstein, associate director of the Emory Vaccine Center in Atlanta, Georgia. "We protect each other by vaccinating our children."
