A Christmas Story The First Lights Of Christmas
You'd think Christmas lights have been around for as long as Christmas itself. Do any of you imagine Christmas without lights? How would children find their way in the dark so early on Christmas morning without them? The history of Christmas lights is closely linked to the dawn of the modern era, when houses began to receive electricity.
As you probably know, Thomas Edison invented the first working light bulb in 1879. A few years later, in 1882, one of his partners used the use of lights on his Christmas tree for the first time. Edward Johnson was the first to electrically light his family's Christmas tree in his New York home. His house was in one of the first neighborhoods of the city to be connected to electricity.
A visiting reporter from Detroit reported the following in The Detroit Post and Tribune: “Last night I walked past Fifth Avenue and called the residence of Edward H. Johnson, vice president of Edison's power company. There, at the bottom of the beautiful halls, was a large Christmas tree that looked very picturesque and mysterious. It was brightly lit with many colored balloons the size of an English walnut and was spinning about six times per minute in a small pine box. There were eighty lights in total encased in these delicate glass eggs, and roughly evenly divided between white, red and blue. As the tree spun and the colors alternated, all the lamps went out and back on with each turn. The result was a continuous flickering of dancing colors, red, white, blue, white, red, blue, all through the night. "
In 1890, Edison published a promotional booklet that may have been the first mention of commercially available electric Christmas lights. He affirmed that “few forms of decoration are more beautiful and pleasant than the miniatures of incandescent lamps placed among the flowers or woven into garlands or festoons; to decorate Christmas trees or greenhouses . "
From there, the popularity of Christmas lights exploded. In a short time, all the families had them and they became synonymous with the Christmas tree. It's hard to imagine Christmas without Christmas lights. I show you my furry red cap, Mr. Edison. You have given us all a gift that we will always love!
