New Year's Resolutions: Do They Really Work?
Remember that feeling at the start of a new school year that starts with new school supplies? That feeling of freshness and new beginnings when you open the first page of an intact notebook and hold a new sharp pencil in your hand ready to make the first mark? Usually, the first few pages of my notebook had my sharpest handwriting, which then deteriorated over time. My desire to do my best, to achieve higher standards of excellence diminished as the daily grind of everyday life brought me back to the standards of mediocrity and just getting by. The start of a new year is often the time when we reflect on the past year and see the things we would like to change and do differently. A new year represents a new beginning, a new chapter, and a clean page without writing in life. There is a desire to live better, reach new goals, and start over. We make New Year resolutions and promise that we will keep them this year. We gather our willpower and determination and enter the new year with the highest and most sincere intentions. New Year's resolutions have almost become this season's joke. It is well known that those New Year resolutions often fail as quickly as they are made. A common solution is a goal of losing weight by eating sensibly and exercising. It's the busiest time of the year for fitness centers, but statistics have shown that new memberships are rarely kept for more than a month or two. One thing New Year's resolutions show is that good intention are not enough to make permanent changes in our lives. Why do most New Year's resolutions fail?
We are motivated by the pleasure of life more than by pain. Many resolutions involve some kind of deprivation of pleasure, whether it's eating or breaking a bad habit. We know that although we enjoy our bad habits, their consequences are ultimately not beneficial to either our health or our life. The desire for instant gratification for short-term pleasure is much stronger than any logical mental sense of reason in most cases. We know in our heads what to do, but doing it when it opposes our immediate desires is difficult.
Our mind is made up of two parts; conscious and subconscious mind. Brain activity occurs through neurons. In one second, the conscious mind uses two thousand neurons, and in that second the subconscious mind uses four billion neurons. This means that every second there are two thousand neurons making conscious decisions and four billion neurons making unconscious decisions. Which part of your mind has the most control in your opinion?
The subconscious mind is trained by the constant repetition of the beliefs, values, and lifestyle it has assumed and lived from an early age. You automatically follow the familiar, well-trodden path of well-grounded thoughts, beliefs, and behaviors. The subconscious operates from such a well-established history that it automatically responds with learned responses and behaviors. That is why it is so difficult to create new habits of thoughts and behaviors, the subconscious mind will always try to return to the old familiar way of doing things because they have become so automatic. The conscious mind has a difficult task in making permanent changes due to the power of those four billion neurons. It can be done, but the conscious mind takes hard work to retrain our subconscious.
It is said that you have to do something at least 30 times to create a new habit. Behavior changes learned over the course of a lifetime can take much longer. For example, have you ever got in your car and driven to your destination and don't really remember the trip there? You are guided using the behaviors learned from your subconscious and your conscious mind thought of something else. However, if you were driving to a different country whose habit is to drive across the road, your conscious mind would work very hard to correct the learned and instinctive behavior of your subconscious. In fact, the whole driving experience across the street feels wrong and uncomfortable, and if you lose focus, you could automatically revert to familiar patterns and become a hazard on the road.
Here are some tips for working towards those New Year resolutions:
Don't expect immediate results, it's a process
Plan small achievable steps towards your desired goal
Celebrate each successful step towards your goal and work on it until it feels automatic before moving on to the next one.
Don't give up when relapses and setbacks occur
Review your new steps and goals several times a day. Visualize what your goal will be like
Write down your steps and your goals. Find people who support and encourage you along the way.
